BURIED TREASURE

Unearthing the Riches of the Gospel of Mark

A Message From Hunter R. Hill

Some years ago, when composing a prayer to use at the opening of a class I taught on Mark’s Gospel, I found that these words came unexpectedly to me, almost as a gift. I had very little to do with it except for the quick scribbling I did to get it on paper before it slipped away from me. I hope this gift, God’s wink perhaps, benefits you as much as it has made an impact on my life even years later.
“Spirit of God, who once long ago descended through the torn apart heavens to rest on Jesus, descend yet again into our lives. Open our blinded eyes so that like Bartimaeus, we may see yet again: see You near at hand, with us, among us, out ahead of us, loosed on us. And preparing us — who are afraid — to follow You on the way, even to Jerusalem. Amen.”

A voice from heaven speaks to Jesus,
” You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. “

About the Book

Buried Treasure addresses the easily missed or misperceived themes of Mark’s Gospel, unearthing some surprising discoveries- buried treasures waiting to be found. The book examines nine Markan themes that emerge from the characters, events, and structure of Mark’s story. In each chapter, readers follow a single theme, discovering narrative treasures along the way.

Hunter R. Hill tells present-day stories of transformation and change, drawn from myriad sources, including his own life, and connects them to Mark’s narrative of transformation, resurrection, and change. He links today’s human realities and hopes to those discovered in Mark’s artful account of the life of Jesus and those who imperfectly followed him. Hill also draws on the insight of his own master teachers and mentors, whose observations reveal and crystallize the good news unearthed over the years.

Even for those who have spent a lifetime reading the Bible, much remains to be discovered in Mark’s story, with Hunter R. Hill as a gracious, thoughtful guide. By reading Buried Treasure, readers unearth the riches of Mark’s Gospel.

Jesus’s final words in Mark’s Gospel, cried out from the cross,
” My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? “
Mark 15:34

“Hill has discovered new spiritual riches from the familiar Gospel of Mark. He makes Mark’s text accessible and provides very valuable insights for today. ‘Markan surprises’ throughout show how the Gospel’s story is astonishingly relevant and meaningful for us. Mark believed the story of Jesus matters in an ultimate way. Experiencing the risen Christ as present and active energizes all life.
